Reliable Care for Your Chimney Needs

Burning firewood that keeps your flue cleaner

Choosing the right firewood can help reduce creosote buildup and keep your chimney cleaner.

Opt for Hardwoods

Hardwoods like oak, maple, and hickory burn hotter and longer than softwoods, producing less smoke and creosote. Creosote is a sticky substance that can build up in your chimney, increasing the risk of chimney fires.

By choosing seasoned hardwood, you minimize the production of creosote. Properly seasoned wood has been dried for at least six months and contains less moisture, ensuring a cleaner burn.

Avoid Burning Softwoods

Softwoods, such as pine, tend to produce more sap and resin, which can lead to increased creosote buildup. These woods burn faster and cooler, often resulting in incomplete combustion.

In addition to potentially creating more creosote, softwoods don't provide as much heat per log as hardwoods. For cleaner burning and better heat efficiency, stick to hardwoods whenever possible.

Importance of Seasoned Firewood

Seasoned firewood is crucial for efficient burning and reducing smoke output. Fresh-cut wood contains more moisture, which leads to more smoke and creosote. To identify well-seasoned wood, look for cracks in the ends and a lighter weight.

Storing your firewood properly can also aid in seasoning. Ensure it's kept off the ground and covered while allowing airflow. This process helps maintain dry, ready-to-burn logs that contribute to a cleaner chimney.
